Ingredients
- 1 lb ground beef, 80/20 (450 g)
- 1 large yellow onion, thinly sliced
- 2 Tbsp unsalted butter (28 g)
- 1 Tbsp vegetable oil (15 ml)
- 1/2 tsp salt
- 1/2 tsp ground black pepper
- 1/2 tsp garlic powder
- 8 slices rye bread
- 8 slices Swiss cheese
- 2 Tbsp mayonnaise (30 g)
- 2 Tbsp butter, softened (28 g)
Directions
- Melt 2 Tbsp butter with the vegetable oil in a large skillet over medium heat. Add the sliced onion and cook for 15-20 minutes, stirring occasionally, until soft and deeply golden brown.
- Divide the ground beef into 4 portions and shape into thin patties slightly larger than the bread. Season both sides with salt, pepper, and garlic powder.
- Heat a skillet or griddle over medium-high heat. Cook the patties for 3-4 minutes per side, or until browned and cooked through.
- Spread mayonnaise on one side of each slice of rye bread.
- Layer one slice of bread with a slice of Swiss cheese, a beef patty, caramelized onions, another slice of Swiss cheese, and a second slice of bread.
- Spread the softened butter over the outsides of each sandwich.
- Cook the patty melts in a skillet over medium-low heat for 3-4 minutes per side, pressing gently, until the bread is golden and crispy and the cheese is completely melted.
- Slice each patty melt in half and serve hot.
